Little is known about the years Jane Austen lived in Bath, particularly from 1801 to 1804, which is quite unusual for scholars of the author. None of the many letters she regularly exchanged with family and friends from this period have survived, probably because her sister Cassandra destroyed them, as she did with many others. The reasons remain unclear and speculation abounds.
